Techie Agbayani in a Mindanao movie "Limbunan"

“Limbunan,” hailed by critics at the recently concluded Venice Film Festival as exceptionally artistic, depicts Moro nuptial practices. It shows members of a Maguindanaoan family as they prepare their 16-year-old sibling Ayesha for her wedding to a man she barely knows. The movie, which stars among others Techie Agbayani, would provide the audience a glimpse of the Maguindanao tradition of isolating a bride-to-be as she prepares herself for the big event. Aside from Agbayani, the Limbunan cast also includes Joem Bascon, Jea Lyka Cinco and this city’s very own Jamie Unte and Mayka Lintongan. On November 12, Limbunan will again be screened outside the Philippines, this time in Germany. Pokwang recalls her struggling days

Long ago, Kapamilya star Pokwang was a hardworking girl named Marietta Subong. With her siblings, she was a diyaryo-bote girl pushing a kariton in Antipolo subdivision and she was also a sampaguita vendor in front of Antipolo Church. She was extremely poor and showbiz fame was the farthest thing from her mind. At the age of 17, Marietta was already eking out a living for her big family as an entertainer in Japan. According to Filipino Musica's website, she also worked in Abu Dhabi as a dancer and cheoregrapher. It was at that time that she experienced her "greatest tragedy," she said. In an interview with a broadsheet and in later television features on her life, she related that when her six-year-old son was dying of a brain tumor, she was not allowed to end her six-month contract in Abu Dhabi. She also had no personal money to fly home to his side. When she returned home for good, she worked as a singer/stand up comedienne at the comedy bar, Music Box (now closed), on Quezon Avenue in Quezon City. “I experienced of not getting paid because we didn’t have enough customers. Is it our fault if they don’t have customers? Then I have to ride a bus at dawn until I fell asleep in the bus. The driver will wake me up if the bus has reached the station. My money was just enough. I owed at the eating places near the Music Box. But I already paid them. And if Pokwang did not become the comedienne she is today, she says, still laughing, "Maybe I’m a carpenter now or a canteen cook.” (www.pep.ph) picture from abs-cbn

Imortal hindi ginaya ang Twilight

STARS of the ABS-CBN series “Imortal” told Inquirer Entertainment that their show is no “Twilight” clone. “Some would say that we drew inspiration from ‘Twilight,’ but we tried to make our show as original as possible. Our attack is very Pinoy,” said Angel Locsin, who portrays a werewolf in the series. Her co-star, John Lloyd Cruz, who plays a vampire, agreed: “Comparisons with ‘Twilight’ cannot be avoided, considering how popular the novels and movies are globally. But our approach and execution are different.” But what makes “Imortal” so Pinoy? “The way we portrayed the characters. The heart is Pinoy. Foreign vampire stories are more cerebral, but ours is more heartfelt,” said John Lloyd. (Bayani San Diego Jr., Philippine Daily Inquirer) picture from http://connect.in.com, www.pinoyexchange.com

Bosnian refugees get donation after Jolie's visit

A U.S. government donation will provide housing for the last 15 people living in a Bosnian refugee camp that movie stars Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt drew attention to by visiting. I will tattoo her name here," said camp resident Goran Markovic, 47, pointing to one of his arms. After the April visit, refugee camp residents called Jolie their "beauty." But when they found out about the U.S. donation she became "our saint," said Markovic. Two refugees — sisters Lena Babic, 78, and Mara Babic, 72 — fondly remember entertaining Jolie and Pitt on Easter Sunday when they visited them in their small room in the former school that serves as the refugee camp in Rogatica. "Paranormal 2" rules North American box office

Moviegoers around the world got into the Halloween spirit early during the weekend, snapping up an estimated $63.5 million worth of tickets for the haunted-house sequel "Paranormal Activity 2," distributor Paramount Pictures said on Sunday. The film opened at No.1 in the United States and Canada with a better-than-expected $41.5 million during its first three days, and was also the top choice in Britain, Australia, Mexico and Russia, the Viacom Inc-owned studio said. In all, it earned $22 million from 21 foreign markets. With a production cost of just $3 million, the movie should generate good profits for Paramount. Its 2009 predecessor cost about $15,000 to make, and ended up with $107 million in North America, driven almost exclusively by word-of-mouth in the deliberate absence of a major marketing campaign.
